Where the two genuinely differ
Higher Logic has been in the association market since 2007. Built around organisations that were already running member databases and admin tools, it grew into a broad suite that serves both sides — discussions and events for members, marketing automation and an internal platform for the team — shaped around what associations need to manage and connect.
Disciple came at the problem from a different angle: what would it take to build a community members actually open? It came up building bespoke apps for organisations one at a time, so it starts from what you already run.
Higher Logic gives members a set of places to go: a discussion board, a member directory, a document library, and a Q&A section. Disciple looks like the apps they already have on their phones — a feed, posts with photos and video, polls, comments, and a notification when someone replies. Nobody has to be shown how to use it.
Mobile experience
Higher Logic is primarily web-based but does offer mobile apps — a Connected Community app, plus Mobile 365 for year-round engagement and Mobile Events for conferences, the latter powered by a third party.
Disciple was built mobile-first from the start, and a fully branded app is standard on every plan — your name in the store, your brand on the screen. When you want members actually showing up, that reach matters.
Integration
Higher Logic connects to more than 30 association management systems out of the box, with single sign-on, and bundles in association-specific modules — volunteer management, mentor matching, and committees. The connectors are templated, though, so you take the suite much as it comes. They cover the systems most associations run, which isn't the same as covering the ones you run.
Disciple is built the other way round. The integration is made to fit rather than picked from a list — the API, single sign-on, and connections into whichever parts of your operation matter, including the ones no template covers. Where an association runs dedicated tools for volunteering, mentoring, or committees, those stay where they are. Disciple doesn't pull them into the app or ship a thinner copy of each — it keeps the data moving between them, so the systems stay in step. The member record stays in your AMS and the community becomes the place members talk to each other: a change in membership status can change access, and what happens in the community flows back into the systems you already trust.
Human support
Higher Logic runs a real support desk — ticketed and phone-based, with response targets from 30 minutes for a critical issue down to three business days for a minor one — and customers generally rate it well. You don't get a named person as standard, though. That comes with a paid services package, which also shortens the response targets.
Disciple works differently. You get a named account manager as standard — a person who knows your community and helps with the running of it, not just the software. That isn't a bolted-on promise: Disciple began as a custom app-build agency, so sitting with people and supporting them directly is simply how it has always worked.
If you don't have a big team of your own, having a real person to call on is often what makes a community stick.
Which should you choose?
Start by deciding what you want your community to be. That answers most of this on its own.
Choose Higher Logic if you need the association-specific machinery built in — volunteer management, mentor matching, committees — and you'd rather have all of it in one suite than run those alongside.
Choose Disciple if the members' experience is the point — a branded, mobile-first community they actually open and post in — and you need the integration built to fit your systems rather than picked off a list. It often works best for a particular programme or initiative inside a larger association, rather than for the whole member operation.
