As technology breaks down geographical and other barriers, our collective understanding of 'community' is undergoing a renaissance. The age-old human desire to connect remains undiminished, but people are increasingly building those connections, and the vital sense of belonging that comes with them, online.

Experts of various fields are discovering a new gravitational force: the membership community. These online havens, tailored around collective passions and objectives, aren't just platforms; they're vibrant neighborhoods. They're where shared ideas blossom into collaborations, and casual chats evolve into meaningful connections.

Ready to navigate the world of membership communities and lay the cornerstone for your own digital neighborhood? Let's embark on this journey together.

Why start a membership community?

In today's interconnected digital age, the desire for more personalized, niche communities and transformational clubs has surged. More than ever, people are searching for spaces where they can connect deeply, share freely, and grow personally and professionally. Membership communities address this need head-on, offering a plethora of benefits both for the members and for those who run them.

• A haven for shared interests: At the heart of every membership community is a shared interest or goal. Whether it's a passion for a particular hobby, a professional field, or a personal development journey, these communities serve as a haven where members can dive deep into discussions, share resources, and genuinely connect with like-minded individuals.
• Nurturing relationships: A membership-based community isn't just a transactional space; it's a relational one. Here, individuals become collaborators, supporters, and often, friends. As these relationships grow, they open doors to new opportunities - be it collaborations on projects, partnerships for business ventures, or simply a friendship that enriches one's life. It's a space where like-minded people can exchange ideas and grow together, making the experience truly reciprocal.
• Recurring revenue stream: For those considering the business aspect, membership communities offer a promising revenue model. Unlike one-time transactions, members contribute recurring fees—monthly, quarterly, or annually—for continued access to the community and its resources. This not only generates a predictable revenue stream but also fosters a sense of commitment among members. They're investing in the community, and this investment often translates into higher engagement and loyalty.
• Positioning as an authority: A well-run membership community is more than just a gathering space. It's a testament to your expertise in the niche. As the community thrives, so does your reputation. Members, and those outside the community, begin to see you as an authority, a go-to figure for insights, advice, and leadership. This positioning can amplify your brand's reach, open up new opportunities, and draw more people into your community, creating a cycle of growth and credibility.
• Continuous learning: Membership communities break traditional learning boundaries. Each member brings fresh insights, creating a dynamic educational hub that constantly adapts and grows.

How to start a membership community

As virtual interactions have become the norm for learning and building connections, starting a membership community is more relevant than ever. However, the journey from conception to a thriving community involves multiple steps, each crucial in its own right. Here's a breakdown of the foundational steps you need to consider:

• Identify your niche: Every successful community revolves around a shared interest or goal. Start by identifying your own expertise and understanding who your target audience is. Dive deep into their preferences, pain points, aspirations, and challenges. This research will not only shape your community's identity but also inform the kind of resources, content, and engagement strategies you'll employ. Remember, a well-defined niche can be the difference between a community that thrives and one that fizzles out.
• Set clear objectives: Before you jump into building the community, clarify your objectives. Are you looking to create a platform where professionals can build their skills together? A space for hobbyists to share resources? Or perhaps, a support group for individuals facing similar challenges? These objectives will serve as your north star, guiding every decision you make, from the platform you choose to the kind of content you produce.
• Engage regularly: The vitality of a community depends on how active and engaged its members are. As a community leader, it's imperative that you set the tone. Engage with your members by initiating discussions, sharing valuable resources, or bringing in guest speakers. Prompt responses to queries and concerns, coupled with consistent value addition, can foster a sense of belonging among members. Think of engagement as the heartbeat of your community; keeping it regular and robust ensures your community's health and growth.
• Lay down community guidelines: Just like any organization or group, your community will need a set of guidelines or ground rules. These aren't meant to be restrictive but serve to create a safe, respectful, and constructive environment. Whether it's about promotional content, respectful interactions, or the kind of resources that can be shared, having clear guidelines helps in preventing conflicts and misunderstandings down the line.
• Collaborate and co-create: One of the beauties of a membership based community is the collective knowledge and skill set of its members. Encourage members to collaborate on projects, co-create content, or host sessions. This not only adds value to the community but also instills a sense of ownership among members.

Membership platform

Choosing the right membership platform is akin to building the foundation for your home. The strength and functionality of this foundation determine the success and sustainability of your community structure. A platform should not only be user-friendly but also flexible enough to evolve with your community's needs.

Membership tiers & pricing

Setting the right price for your membership community isn't just about the numbers; it's about understanding the value you bring and how you present it. Strategically tiered pricing can attract a diverse group of members while ensuring they see tangible benefits at every price point.

• Diversifying with multiple tiers: Introducing a range of membership levels, from basic to premium, like the Disciple platform allows you to do, allows potential members to choose an option that aligns with both their budget and their desired level of engagement. For instance, a basic tier might offer access to general content and forums, while premium tiers could provide exclusive webinars, courses, or advanced resources. By doing this, you make your community accessible to a broader audience while also providing avenues for deeper engagement to those who seek it.
• Balancing price with value: It's essential that every tier, whether it's basic or premium, delivers value that's in line with its cost. This doesn't just mean the number of features but also the quality and relevance of those features. When members feel that they're receiving significant value, they're more likely to remain engaged, loyal, and even advocate for your community.
• Evolving alongside your community: The needs, preferences, and expectations of your community will change over time. Whether it's due to market shifts, the introduction of new features, or feedback from members, it's crucial to regularly reassess your pricing structure. This ensures that your offerings remain relevant and continue to offer compelling value, keeping your community both vibrant and financially sustainable.

Enhance your content

High-quality content is the heartbeat of any membership community. It's what draws members in, keeps them engaged, and provides them with value.

• Diverse content formats: There’s a myriad of digital content formats that you can offer to your membership community. Whether it's bite-sized articles, comprehensive e-books, engaging webinars, interactive quizzes, or insightful podcasts, there's a format for every type of learner. Offering a rich variety of content not only caters to different preferences but also ensures that your community stays lively and dynamic.
• Empower through collaboration: Instead of being the sole content creator, invite members to contribute. This could mean crowdsourcing ideas, co-writing articles, or hosting member-led webinars. Such collaboration not only brings fresh voices and perspectives but also fosters a sense of ownership among members, making them feel more invested in the community.
• Keep your finger on the pulse: The world changes rapidly, and so do industries and interests. Ensure your content is not just plentiful but also current. Regularly update your resources to reflect the latest trends, research, and feedback. Being a beacon of up-to-date information boosts your community's credibility and trustworthiness.

Create a marketing plan

Building a community is just the first step. To ensure it thrives and grows, you need an effective marketing strategy tailored to your unique audience.

• Pinpointing the right channels: The internet is full of places where people hang out digitally. It's crucial to identify where your potential members are. This might be on popular social media platforms, niche forums, industry-specific websites, or even offline at conferences and events. Tailor your marketing efforts to these spaces for maximum impact.
• Leverage industry influencers: Partnering with influencers in your domain can give your community a significant visibility boost. Whether it's through joint webinars, guest posts, or shoutouts, these collaborations can introduce your community to a broader audience that already has an interest in your niche.
• Stay in tune with your members: Marketing isn't just about acquisition; it's also about retention. Engage in regular dialogue with your existing members to understand their needs, feedback, and preferences. Their insights can help refine your marketing strategies, ensuring they resonate and remain impactful.
